The problem with using percoten at first is precisely that it is long
acting. While there is a standard staring point for meds as mentioned
before the correct dose is different for each ferret. Using a short
acting drug like fludrocortisone (florinef) allows the vet to adjust
the dosage based on measured electrolyte values. The chances of
avoiding an Addisonian Crisis are much better if adjustments can be
made quickly as needed if electrolyte values are off.

Fludrocortisone can be given orally in liquid form at the same time as
the pediapred. Generally you will need both to keep both sodium and
potassium levels where they should be.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet, just a ferret owner
recalling my experiences and conversations I had with our vet.

All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
