Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Update on urine scald/distemper - sneezing now, and question about Clavamox
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My question about the Clavamox - my vet sometimes under or over does medications...does this sound right?

Clavamox drops, the 15ml bottle, and he gets 0.15ml twice daily. I believe Clavamox drops only come in one strength. Does anyone know if that is a weak amount of Clavamox or just right? I am concerned of course.

He was "found outside" but really he was dropped off by someone who abused him. He was starved and has urine scalds all over the right side of his body. I was concerned about distemper because of the burns and the way they were spread. But I thought it may not be distemper because he did not show facial signs and had no sneezing, coughing, or runny nose, or eye discharge. He was eating and drinking on his own, as well, and lets me know when he needs to go to the bathroom. We got Momentamax for his skin.

But his temp yesterday was 102.4, now today it's 103.4. He still wants to eat and drink on his own and is eating hard and softened kibble. I am having to give 20ml of LRS twice to three times daily.

So his fever has gone up, and now he is sneezing, having sneezing fits, and I can hear congestion when he breathes and feel it (as he is very thin). Now he has a runny nose. I wiped it up with a baby wipe. It is brown colored to clear.

There is no eye discharge or runny eyes. He is likely 4 to 6 years old, so he is not very young. I am just doing what I can. I don't know if I should also give more antibiotics - I have tons of amoxicillin. My vets are not skilled when it comes to this stuff - California being a FFZ they don't get cases that need supportive care a lot.

This is and has been a total nightmare. I bleached myself so I could go into the ferret room today and clean. I hope they don't get it - I don't know what I will do. I haven't put him down because I haven't figured out what it is - and my vet said he would have to research the test for distemper. I doubt it is but I will keep on with the bleach. Oh, the insanity. I wasn't even supposed to bring him home - I got a call from a rescue to pick them up and our previous arrangement was for me to transport from the shelter to another ferret club. That ferret club backed out and I had nowhere else to take him. Misunderstanding or not, I still have him. It wasn't until I got home I realized he was very very ill.
