Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Vena Cava ligation
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Amanda
Sorry to hear about Izzy passing away.
When one ligates the vena cava the blood then has
to go to the vertebral venous sinus to the azygous vein and
then into the cranial vena cava. In most ferrets this happens
with no problem, but in roughly 25% of ferrets (and dogs and
humans) this creates problems (high blood pressure in the vena
cava and death). Pred should be used to lower the risk of blood
clots after ligation, but unfortunately there is still a risk with ligating
the vena cava.
Again sorry to hear about your loss,
Jerry
