Everything the moderator posted about epinephrine and anaphylactic
vaccination reactions matches what was done for the two ferrets I've had
over the years who have had that sort of severe reaction. In the cases of
Nyssa and Podo these reactions were almost immediately after
vaccination and they both collapsed quickly and went into shock.
Dexamathasone will undoubtedly be used as well. Subcutaneous fluids
and oxygen were also given. If there was bloody vomit and/or diarrhea
famotadine may also given and carafate prescribed for a few days
after.

Podo, who had been blissfully reaction free the previous year, had
this happen when he was probably eight. He swelled up like a baloon
and his paw pads and nose turned bright red. He had difficulty
breathing as well. He was kept by our vet in an oxygen tent during
the early part of recovery. He was touch and go for a while but he
recovered fairly quickly. Between the severe reaction, his age, and
later medical issues we decided not to vaccinate him the following
year.

Nyssa had her anaphylactic reaction to at age one or two, I forget
which. She had the bloody stool and vomit and collapsed but didn't
have the other symptoms Podo showed. Our vet did come up with a four
day regimen of injected dexamethasone to prevent a recurrence and she
was vaccinated for the following few years without problems. She'd be
sleepy afterwards but that was it. If you search on Nyssa in the
archives you'll find all the details of what our vet did.

Not all severe vaccination reactions are anaphylactic or immediate.
We learned that the hard way with Chin Soon this year. You won't
mistake an anaphylactic reaction. It will scare the heck out of you.

All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
