Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Update on urine scald/distemper : additional information
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I forgot to go over the fact that this ferret could not walk on Monday. he can stand up on his own to go potty, but other than that, he collapses.

The vet wrote on his paperwork that he is ataxic. I guess that means his muscles are not coordinated. However, I had thought he was starved, because of his massive urine scalds on his side.

Does ataxia mean you can't control movements? Would an ataxic ferret be able to direct himself to the bathroom area by crawling over, using his front legs, and then with a little help putting his legs under him, stand up on his own to urinate/defecate, then collapse? Or is that too much for an ataxic ferret?

We assumed he was simply starved, since all of his ribs were able to be felt, as well as his low weight (1 lb). He has gained weight...but still cannot walk and crawls to eat and drink and go potty.
