Just wanted to add my 2 cents into the AV block discussion. My April was
diagnosed with a third degree AV block back in March. At the time, We
discussed the possibility of a pacemaker or meds with our vet and the
cardiologist and we all agreed to see how she did with just stabilizing her
insulinoma, which she was also diagnosed with at the same time. She has
been on 0.1 cc of prednisolone (15mg/5ml) three times daily with wonderful
results. At this point, her only symptom is the slow heart rate, about 80
beats per minute. Since she is otherwise asymptomatic at this point, my vet
advised against use of Theophylline or similar medications since it would
only serve to increase her heart rate, thus making her heart work harder.
My vet teases that she has the heart rate of a long distance runner :-) If
she shows signs of syncope in the future, we'll revisit use of medications.
Best,
Lucie
