Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Anti estrogen medications
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Sukie,
Yes, there are several anti-estrogen medications.
Most are aromatase inhibitors (ie they inhibit the
enzyme (aromatase) that is needed to make estrogen)
such as Arimidex (anastrozole by AstraZeneca), Femara
(letrozole by Novartis), Aromasin (exemestane by Pharmacia
and Upjohn), and melatonin. Others are estrogen receptor meds
such as Faslodex monthly injectable (fulvestrant by AstraZeneca)
and Nolvadex (tamoxifen by AstraZeneca). Unfortunately tamoxifen
does not work in ferrets because it actually has estrogen like effects
in ferrets. Thus it makes things worse! Arimidex is the one used most
often in ferrets, but Femara is the best one on the human side.
Arimidex is usually used at 0.1mg/kg once a day.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
