Dear Jerry,

I have read the papers on ferrets, distemper and vitamin A.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to make sure a ferret's vitamin A status is replete before a CD vaccination and have a Vit A supplement or liver after the vaccination? Could this prevent vaccine-induced distemper? Unfortunately we have many worried ferret owners who are reluctant to have their ferrets vaccinated because of fear of vaccine-induced distemper. Their fear is not unfounded because it has happened.

What are your thoughts on this?nn

Ciao,
Christina

[Moderator's Note:
Christina, if there is killed virus distemper
vaccine there then the ferrets will not have
the risk of catching distemper. What you
want are killed virus vaccines, and preferably
you want vaccines that are not grown in ferret
tissue lines. Live virus grown in ferret tissue
lines is the worst. There are many distemper
vaccine options (though with two large mergers
in the process of combining some of the largest
animal medicine makers, and some products
being auctioned off to other manufacturers there
are some unknowns about which products will
be lost, which may be redesigned, and which
may change in price). The business aspects are
off-topic for the FHL but ferret groups will want
to politely encourage involved companies to
continue making ferret meds. For a bit of info
to begin such efforts see:
