Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Melatonin and Lupron as prevention of adrenal disease
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
If you are going to supply melatonin before the animal is affected, I would try to do it orally. My babies were all given melatonin implants (when I only had a few ferrets) when they were 2 years, and I meant to keep doing it. However, I learned that the capsule stays in the body after the melatonin is gone.
I have had to remove several of these capsules from ferret's backs, because the skin gets thin there as they age, and it starts to create problems. Sometimes it cuts the skin underneath, and becomes infected, or the ferret scratches it, or gets it caught in a fight, and the whole thing becomes a mess.
It is not a big implant, but if you are doing this every year, I would suggest removing any implant cases that are empty beforehand at the vet.
Af far as Lupron - I have used it in adrenal ferrets that have had successful surgeries, but continued to show symptoms. They continued to have issues even on the lupron.
I wonder if it can be used to prevent adrenal disease. That would be interesting, albeit very expensive, to do for each ferret.
