There are many things that can cause a ferret spleen to become enlarged, infection is not the only cause. Many times a cause is never found (as with my boy). And, the spleen does not always decrease in size once enlarged.
In some cases the spleen can be left, never to cause a problem. I had one boy whose spleen enlarged following adrenal surgery. The enlargement stopped at a certain point and it remained that size for the remainder of the ferrets life (4+ years), never giving him any trouble.
In other cases (as with the boy I wrote of in my previous post) the spleen must be removed to avoid a rupture (which will kill....my boys spleen made up more then half his body weight and filled his entire abdomen, crushing all other organs).
When it comes to ferret spleens the issue must be dealt with on a case by case basis.
