My vet dopes not routinely remove spleens just because they are enlarged. He did take a spleen out of one of my kids several years ago, but it was because it had a tumor on it, and he was afraid it was a hermangeoscaroma. Fortunately, it turned out to be something benign. He has done the surgery, and is very good at it, but believes it is only for cases where leaving the spleen is likely to be a serious negative impact on the ferret's life.
The young boy here is running out of options, and that may be something I will have to consider. I don't know if it because he has lost weight, or because the spleen has grown even more (or both), but I now feel the spleen just holdiong him.
His RBC continues to decline slowly as well. If surgery is done, he will certainly need a blood transfusion with it.
If he doesn't make it, I will definitely be having a necropsy done with pathology, so that hopefully we can determine the cause.
This has been an extremely stressful week for me. I have a 9 year old sprite that I think will leave me this weekend, also.
