Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Pasturella info needed for someone
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Regarding Pasturella, I don't have any "real iformation" on this. However, I can relate an experience I went through with my ferrets.
When I introduced a new ferret to my home. All four of of the ferrets got diarrhea that seemed to come and go. I had all of their poops cultured, and two of the ferrets (siblings from the same litter) had pasturella.

My vet said that the Pasturella is largely an opportunistic infection that flares under other conditions and stress.
My vet prescribed some meds for all 4 ferrets (the other two had other "bugs") I don't recall which med was used.

The net result was that all of my ferrets were doing the "stress poop" thing from the introduction of the new kid (BIG, rambunctious boy). I was paranoid that the new boy may have introduced something to the others (He got the "runs" too.)The Pasturella was never transmitted to the other ferrets. I suspect that the Pasturella was something that was passed to the siblings from the mom. None of my ferrets have since been bothered by Pasturella.
