Subject: [ferrethealth] US import of deslorelin?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Has anyone in the US had their vet successfully import deslorelin for the treatment of adrenal in ferrets? I know there is a veterinary exception for non-FDA approved drugs, but wondering if any of you have information on how successful this actually is and long it would even take to get it? Thanks for any advice! -Kathryn
Background-
Ruby is a 4+ year old ferret (stray) who did great on melatonin implants only for 5 months (2 implants during this time) then we added lupron for 3 months in addition with no improvement in vulva swelling and just did a double lupron shot with no improvement. She had stump pyometra surgery last July and an exploratory in which both her adrenals looked normal. I hadn't considered adrenalectomy since there was no distinguishing difference between the two glands one year ago. Even if there is a difference now, I am hesitant since she has already had one major surgery, has some IBD symptoms, and we lost quite a healthy, big boy last year while under anesthesia for adrenal surgery and this has really made me nervous.
Thanks for your time!

[Apparently, the process became more
complicated and more restricted as of a
few weeks ago according to a friend whose
vet did a recent importation, but this past
post provides the info that will help get
started.

Other possible causes of enlarged vulva can
include things like antibiotic resistant
infection, a retained ovary or ovarian
fragment, or an apocrine cyst if the
enlargement is not symmetrical or there
are dots. We currently have one on two
antibiotics long term to clear up an infection
with the antibiotics chosen by culture results
and trial and error. These things can occur
in combination, too.

If malignancy is present rather than hyperplasia
then the growth will be less responsive to meds
but surgery could be curative depending on
type of malignancy.
