Subject: [ferrethealth] my boy, Dino, just died suddenly -- i am at a loss to understand what happened
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I just went to let my ferrets out of their cages and discovered my boy, Dino, dead. He looked like he does when asleep, but when i reached in to pet him he was cold. There is no rigor of the body -- he still bends and i almost thought he was just comatose -- but i see no signs of breathing and his jaw is clamped tight.

Dino is about 5 -- he was a rescue so it is hard to be exact. He is a bit chubby, but has been more energetic recently than i have seen him in months -- he lost his cage mate in January and it has taken him some time to accept his new buddy, Stimpy. His fir is as thick and silky as ever, appetite is good and he was pooing as much as always (lots!). I am just at a loss!

I will say that in recent months i have figured out that he is blind -- he never had very good eyesight but while he may see shadows he really did not react to visual stimulus.

I am hoping that someone can give me an idea of what could have caused this sudden death.

[Moderator's Note:

It is best to get him to a veterinarian for a necropsy with pathology.
There are multiple possible causes of sudden death,
from undiscovered malignancies to thrown clots secondary
to things like heart disease or some other things, to poisoning,
and more.]
