Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: picking brains: unusual changes in blood work
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

While insulinoma is possible the presentation makes it
questionable in this ferret, so no one is discounting it
as a possibility but the fit is not good despite it being
more common than the alternatives.

When insulinoma produces a number that low it has
typically developed slowly and the ferret adjusted to
it.

It takes a long while for it to progress to a point where
the numbers can be that low and asymptomatic.

When Insulinoma varies greatly (sometimes producing
normal numbers) that tends to be at the beginning
before it is bad.

So, you see where the two aspects don't normally fit
together for insulinoma once you:

Remember that he had normal readings only 2 weeks ago,
remains without any symptoms at all and very active,
and that the numbers were in the low 40s.

One thing being strongly considered is that both machines
may have happened to go on the fritz simultaneously but
there are less common pancreatic growths which can do this
and in close to 3 decades with ferrets we have personally
dealt with two of those so the more extensive blood work
is being done. If he has either of the two we've encountered
before he is at risk of a sudden crash.
