I noticed Sue's ascites during 1 of my weekly instpections where I feel and look at each of my ferrets all over. She was just like a bag of water. The vet examined her and took blood, but there were no conclusive results. After several blood draws and ultrasound with no firm results or improvement it was decided to do exploratory surgery (all this time she was eating, playing and pooping normally).
On the mornoning of the surgery Sue was playing and wrestling with no sign of any illness.
Twenty minutes after the vet had taken Sue into the operating room he called me in and showed me what he had found.
Sue's liver was entirely black except for a small portion of 1 lobe. The
vet said if he touched it, it would rupture and the bleeding would be
uncontrollable.
As it was on the point of rupturing anyway and could well have
done so during closure it was decided that she would be euthanased.
I was in total shock as it was so unexpected from her behaviour, my
only regret is that I was not able to say goodbye to her. It still hurts
to this day.

Quote (wikipaedia)
Hemangiosarcoma is a rare, rapidly growing, highly invasive variety
of cancer. It is a blood-fed sarcoma; that is, blood vessels grow
directly into the tumor and it is typically filled with blood. A frequent
cause of death is the rupturing of this tumor, causing the victim to
rapidly bleed to death.

Luckily it seems that Possum does not have such a severe problem, I hope he lives a long and happy life.

Tony.
