I am happy to report that, after a vet visit today, Possum was determined to not have ascites. The vet showed me how his stomach would react to touching and jiggling if his weight gain was due to excess fluid, and he said that the fact that he was able to feel Possum's organs thru the extra weight was a good sign. He felt no abnormalities. He determined that Possum was healthy, and that the extra 0.5 lb. that he has gained in the last 6 weeks, despite a carefully monitored diet, could be seasonal weight gain. We've only had Possum for about 3 months, so we haven't been thru a whole annual cycle with him yet, but this is certainly the biggest 'seasonal' weight shift that we've seen in any of our ferrets.
