Subject: [ferrethealth] Diarrhea persists beyond meds etc
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I'm writing again about my Tocho and his diarrhea again. Brief history:
All ferrets (5 in all, and two large cages) were treated for giardia
beginning a few months ago. Everyone responded well to treatment, and the
re-testing beyond the treatment(s) meant all poo was tested together because
we couldn't afford the 5 separate tests, etc. Vet said they would all need
treatment, no matter who had it and who didn't. Tocho's diarrhea came and
went off and on, but mostly on. It's VERY loose and watery, no blood that I
can see.

This last round of treatment was given only to Tocho (vet's decision). Off
and on the diarrhea went away, then returned. It's a couple of weeks past
the treatment now and his still has diarrhea, and it's gotten very bad. The
meds to all in the past was panicure (sp?), but Tocho got that AND flagyl
together this time.

Everyone else's poop seems to be okay. Tocho's is just awful. He eats
fine, plays, sleeps well, and generally just seems like a normal, healthy
boy. Except for this god-awful diarrhea. I need to call the vet again and
see what else we can do/try, but I wanted to check here for suggestions as
to where to go from here.

Not sure if this means anything, but when I took Tocho back in this last
time because of the diarrhea i brought in a stool sample from the night
before, a sample that was kept refrigerated until we went to the vet's.
They checked that sample, and they checked a sample that he 'left' in the
corner on the floor. The Dr didn't say too much about the sample i brought
from home, but he said that the sample taken off the floor was 'teaming with
stuff, including giardia.' I'm not really sure what that meant, though,
since I'm certain the floor isn't bleached after every patient.

I need to get this diarrhea under control. Can anyone suggest anything??
Could he have basic IBD on top of the other stuff going on? Will slippery
elm help??

Thanks.

Ella
