Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Diarrhea persists beyond meds etc
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Just from past experience, I had one that didn't respond after Coccidia tre=
atments, and after tests were negative and he still had diarrhea I had him =
checked, and blood work happened to show a very high glucose ( he had diabe=
tes), so even though that is rare and unlikely related to his persistant di=
arrhea, it was worth having the blood done.

I would also=A0have=A0his stool rechecked for ova and parasites, a fresh sa=
mple from your home ( or likely he will produce in the vet's office on the =
clean=A0table after the rectal temp or on the way in while waiting).=A0 I w=
ould do that before further medications and consider Tocho may have somethi=
ng else going on at this point.

Have you tried changing the diet to one of the more bland/digestable foods?=
=A0 Like Science AD, or ZD, or meat baby food, or making of the chicken sou=
p recipes?=A0 Many posts here mention using pumpkin, so if you search the a=
rchives using either IBD or diarrhea as your key words , or pumpkin, you ca=
n find some of the past suggested diets.

I'm writing again about my Tocho and his diarrhea again. Brief history:
All ferrets (5 in all, and two large cages) were treated for giardia
beginning a few months ago. Everyone responded well to treatment, and the
re-testing beyond the treatment(s) meant all poo was tested together becaus=
e
we couldn't afford the 5 separate tests, etc. Vet said they would all need=

treatment, no matter who had it and who didn't. Tocho's diarrhea came and
went off and on, but mostly on. It's VERY loose and watery, no blood that I=

can see.\

weeks past
the treatment now and his still has diarrhea, and it's gotten very bad. The=

meds to all in the past was panicure (sp?), but Tocho got that AND flagylel=
