Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Is it possible for a ferret to have insulinoma and diabetes at the same time?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Pippin has been diabetic a while, he was diagnosed early January finally when it got so bad we couldnt help but recognize the symptoms. We believe it may be a glucogonoma which will bring up the blood glucose at the first sign of insulin it seems, we got him regulated fairly quickly but it didn't last and he has been very high most of the past 3-4 months, we now seem to finally have found a dose of insulin that is getting him down into a safer range. My point here is that from what I have been able to find out, they can have concurrent insulinoma (tumors of the beta cells) and glucogonomas (tumors of the alpha cells) and therefore be insulinomic and diabetic simultaneously as the tumors grow. If only one could cancel out the other!
Pippin had to have had a very high blood glucose for a while before we detected the problem, even that and him running so high for so long and he hasn't shown signs of neuropathy nor keytones in his urine so far, your baby must have been diabetic for a while is all I can think, they hide things so well we don't always key into the problem until it is too late.
My heart goes out to you Sukie, may she fly high and free on her beautiful new wings.
I include a link to Pippins blood glucose spreadsheet which we have kept since his diagnosis for any who might be interested in seeing it.
