Hi!
I've known two people who have been able to obtain the deslorelin implants (Suprelorin) for their ferrets as follows:
1. treatment of adrenal disease in one female ferret - results have been excellent - both clinical signs and blood work.
2. "contraceptive" used to keep 3 "whole" males from coming into season, which prevents the need for neutering.
I've heard good things about the use of deslorilin in ferrts.
The next part is about deslorelin, but it's sort of off topic since it's what I've learned/heard about regarding the use of deslorelin in the US.
According to a vet I've been in contact with, deslorelin has beome more difficult to obtain in the US in recent years. This vet was using deslorelin on birds (for egg binding - if my memory serves me correctly!) I have heard that the drug may be difficult to get approved because it tends to be abused by some body builders who use anabolic steroids. Apparently, the anabolic steroids break down into estrogens, which produce undesired effects. I also read that deslorelin has been used as a contraceptive in horses. Apparently, a product called ovaban has been approved for limited use in brood mares, and quite a few of the mares have had fertiity issues after the use of this drug. The drug has also been used as a contraceptive in dogs (but not in the US for this purpose - at least as far as I know).
I'm really hoping that deslorelin becomes available very soon. I have my little girl on Lupron, and she's having some issue that seem to be traceable to the lupron. According to a well-respected contact from the UK, deslorelin is more natural to a ferret's system than lupron.
Best Regards,
-jennifer
