Subject: [ferrethealth] Questions for moderator (or anyone else) concerning Pred, Progly, and Insulinoma treatments
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I appreciate the information you underscored in my post concerning
Proglycem/diazoxide, but I have a few questions.

1. Where did you get your information concerning the duration of
prednisone/prednisalone? I've tried to search for it via Google, but I'm
apparently entering the wrong parameters; so far, I've only found
information on how long it stays in the system after stopping use. I've
*heard* from various sources several different durations -- 4 hours, 6
hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours -- but no one has presented me with
sources for the information.

[The source was a past veterinarian caring for one of our ferrets.
I have not looked it up in a reputable pharmacological source
such as the physician section of a product insert, nor asked
a pharmacologist or pharmacist.--SDC]

2. I was unaware that Pred comes in different strengths. I am new to
insulinoma, and I merely took what the vet gave me. I'll check the bottle
for more information on its strength. Does Progly also come in different
strengths?

[A pharmacist will know if Proglycem, or the generic of the same med
which is called diazoxide come in different concentrations. -- Moderator]

3. Are you certain about Proglycem & Diazoxide being a little different? My
bottle, which I obtained from CVS, has both names on it. It was the only
local source I was able to find; my vet hasn't been able to find it for
several years. I'd like to see if I can find a source that sells it any
cheaper, as outrageously expensive as it is.

Forgive me if I sound a little dense -- part of that is due to several
disabilities that make me a little "dumb" at times (my brain no longer
functions as it did when I was in grad school, and sometimes even very
simple concepts are difficult for me to grasp); part is due to my being a
newcomer to insulinoma and its treatments. I've been researching various
other drugs and treatments (aside from surgery). I'd certainly appreciate
any input, either on or off-list.

Thanks~
