Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Questions for moderator (or anyone else) concerning Pred, Progly, and Insulinoma treatments
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

To answer one of your questions, I have found from my own experience that the same TOTAL daily dosage of Prednisolone divided up into 3 doses, 8 hours apart, works more effectively than giving it in 2 doses, 12 hours apart. My vet has said that the pred is metabolised in their system within 8 or 9 hours. I don't know the source of his assertion, but he is well-versed in ferret care, and my own experience has proven him right, at least in the 2 ferrets that I've used pred with.

You can look for studies on this, but I think your best source is people who have used the prednisolone and can tell you about their actual 'real life' experiences. Insulinoma does not act in a 'linear' fashion and sometimes progresses rapidly, sometimes slowly. You need to adjust prednisolone doses based on regular blood glucose tests and based on your ferret's behavior (i.e. if he is becoming more lethargic then it may be time to increase the daily dosage a little).
