Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Diazoxide for ferrets with insolinoma instead of pred????
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Okay, this may help clarify things. Many thanks to
the veterinarian who wrote to me privately about
where confusion may be occurring.

I have heard that the conference was probably the
North American Veterinary Conference in
Orlando and it is possible that the endocrinology
speaker was Dr. Nico Schoemaker but if so then
you can see in his papers and in his doctoral thesis
that adrenal disease is the same in the U.S. as in
Europe.

That would explain the diazoxide/proglycem statement.
They actually do not prefer that med over prednisolone
there, but there is a legal restriction that they have to
try controlling insulinoma with diazoxide/Proglycem
first because that med is an approved med for human
insulinoma there, but then if it does not work they can
add or change to Prednisolone which is not an approved
med for human insulinoma there. It's a legal hitch, not
a difference in treatment based upon how well the meds
work according to what I have been told.
