Are you giving a hairball remedy on a regular basis? Ferrets can not expel hairballs the way that cats do, leaving them prone to hairballs in the intestines. If not treated regularly blockages can occur. One sign of ingested hair is gagging/coughing. A hairball remedy may be all that's needed. If that doesn't clear the issue a vet check may be in order.
