We are not personally wild about giving laxatives really often
so what we do -- and what is not highly appreciated but it
works wonders -- is during shedding seasons like now we
comb the ferrets with either a flea comb or a shedding comb.
The denser the undercoat, the more they shed during that
but it really helps avoid fur balls.

We've had ferrets gag up fur and twice had such a huge fur ball
pass right through on its own that it amazed the treating vets.
In our close to 3 decades with ferrets in the family we've only
had two ferrets who needed surgery for fur balls. One did only
once but we discovered once the mass was examined that it
was largely composed of the fake sheep fleece that is exposed
on many types of bedding and even some tunnel or hut shaped
toys. He liked to snack in bed. So, I hand-sewed sheeting
material over that and not only did it stop that problem, but
the bedding cleans much more easily and it is lasting way, way,
way longer than ever before. HIs could more accurately have
been called a "fur" ball.

The other one was a neural crest variation boy who had multiple
deformities. One of his deformities involved his stomach which
was huge and flaccid, and continually getting worse on both
regards so he could not pass furballs and it even took him over 8
hours to just pass food from his stomach after eating. His stomach
required multiple surgeries and it eventually was the organ that
killed him because it simply had gotten so thin and flaccid that
it shredded on its own. (He had to have surgery for some other
deformities, too, during his life.)

Anyway, we quickly learned that diligent combing during shedding
seasons goes a long way toward reducing the fur ingestion risk.
I highly recommend it.
