Ferret Health List (FHL)Wow, and I thought I was the only one.
I saw on the FML someone posted about going through 8 rounds of antibiotics to try and get rid of clostridium; Felix is about to go on his 5th round in less than a year. WHY is this so hard to get rid of?
Felix complicates things a bit by having chronic, long-term IBD and insulinoma. We don't treat the IBD (nor have we had it biopsied, but my previous vet and I both agreed after many many negative tests for everything else that even if he didn't have it, he still had symptoms). He gets 1 tablet of prednisone 2x/day for the insulinoma. We have tried both metronidazole and Tylan for the clostridium; he's currently on famotidine as well for tummy issues. He has definitely lost body mass with the pred; however his poop has been getting progressively worse, with the tell-tale clostridium "smell."
I am trying a new vet tomorrow. I am hoping that a) we can switch to prednisolone and b) that maybe he can determine which kind of clostridium it is. I have a feeling if we can't get this cleared up eventually this will kill him, just from dehydration/weight loss/weakness.
