My ferret had what you describe.
A vet here did a ear ablation, his first on a ferret.

It turned out to be a aggressive form of cancer that had invaded bone, so he only lived for a few months.
Those months were wonderful, then he suddenly went blind overnight, and slipped into a coma the next day.

The surgery itself is quite tricky as facial nerves are involved. My regular vet would not attempt it.
