Kaopectate changed its formula in the US, around 2003-2004. Since
then, it's contained Bismuth subsalicylate (pink bismuth, same as
what's in Pepto Bismol) which has aspirin-like compounds.
An alternative for those in the US is ordering Kaopectate from
Canadian pharmacies, where the previous formula, using attapulgite
clay, is still in place. It's an over the counter medication and
shouldn't be all that hard to get.
Older history: Kaopectate originally contained kaolin clay and
pectin. In the 1980's, the formula changed to use attapulgite clay.
Then in 2003/4, in the US, it was changed to use Bismuth
subsalicylate.
