Subject: [ferrethealth] possible blockage
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Moochie is eating and pooping and being relatively active. He has kidney problems and an enlarged heart according to his vet. He is four years old. Twice in the past he has had a difficult time passing furballs but they did pass. Once he had to stay overnight at the vet's for this and get fluids. He is a chewer although mostly his own fur. Lately he was squatting but nothing happened so I upped his laxatone. He started pooping although sometimes diarrhea and sometime small formed poops. On New Year's Eve he had retching gagging sounds so I took him into the vet. They tried to convince me it was a cold but I said it wasn't coughing so insisted on x-rays. Nothing showed except gas. They gave him flagyl and said not to call back unless he quit eating. Twice more he has had gagging episodes which last a couple of seconds. I am scared that there is something there and wondering what I'll do. The vet said he didn't like ferrets because he was bitten by one. My regular vet is out of
town but he always argues with me that it is his kidneys or heart making him sick and not a blockage. There are no other ferret knowledgeable vets in the area. I don't think he'd make it thru surgery but I am so afraid he'll block off completely. What is your opinion?
Laurel

[Ferrets get influenza and bacterial sinus infections
as well as some other things, but they do not get colds.

Some have found that a barium enema has removed
a partial blockage if it is already low enough in the
digestive tract.

If he has fake sheep's fleece in his cage remove that
since it has caused "fur"balls in multiple ferrets.
