Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: I urgently need advice!! I think my ferret is dying

I have a suggestion, though I am not a vet. I used to work at an animal hospital and we would see episodes like you describe with your ferret in dogs. More often than not, the dog would be diagnosed with Megaesophagus. I did a google search on ferrets and Megaesophagus and low and behold, the top hit was none other than the wonderful miami ferret page. Here is the link:

I would DEFINITELY recommend having the vet do a barium series. Besides getting a great pic of what is going on in the digestion track via x-rays, barium is very soothing to the stomach. Make sure this is done by someone with experience in ferrets though. When giving barium, you have to be careful to not have the ferret aspirate the solution, which is bad and can lead to pneumonia.
