I completely forgot to mention the possibility of a blockage in my last response. that is a lot more likely than megaesophagus in ferrets. i guess i just assumed that had already been ruled out.
either way, the tests that should be done (barium series/x-rays) are the same to rule out what is wrong. if it is not a blockage, the suggestions for dealing with megaesophagus listed on the miami ferret page are also quite useful for treating ferrets with bad ulcers and have been on too many antibiotics.

He was given three courses of anti-biotics, getting better each time then reverting. We did a barium X-ray combo and found the blockage below the stomach. He had surgery for removal that day.
