Subject: [ferrethealth] Signs of ulcer or something more?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Barry started having dark green, tarry poops today. I am guessing this is due to the stress of all the tests at the vet yesterday, him being put on so many medicines (he hated the Prednisolone, made him foam at the mouth) and hated getting a sub-q. Most of my other ferrets have tolerated these administrations fine. Or the Prednisolone is wrecking his already upset stomach. He is also grinding a lot, he is still eating and trying to eat kibble and drink water on his own also, but I noticed the grinding started after that. He also tried to vomit twice today.

Now, how do I know if this is an ulcer caused by stress, caused by Pred., or if this ISN'T an ulcer and the tumor(s) are doing damage to his GI tract? Is there any way to tell the difference?

My ideas so far (based on advice from some very helpful people)-
- split Pred dose in two
- talk to vet ASAP about switching to SoluMedrol
- add Benebac
- add Clavamox for ulcer
- add Vivify
- add Graviola

I am going to try to mix as much of this into his soup (especially the herbal stuff) cuz if he is stressed from being on meds this would send him over the edge.

I would be interested to know, though, if this is an ulcer that can get better, thats a relief, but if he is in pain or bleeding from his tumor doing something (infiltrating?) his intestines or stomach, maybe we are putting him through this for nothing.
