The panel checks levels of Estradiol, Androstenedione and 17-hydroxyprogesterone.

I'm not sure what studies you're referring to but I typically see adrenal disease arise at under two years of age, my youngest at only 5 months of age.
[Probably the early works of Dr. Nico Schoemaker who found a range
of ages of onset but the mode -- i.e. most common -- time of onset
was about 3 years after neutering. You will want to read his doctoral
thesis, Karen, and at least one paper after that goes into this.

Testing can catch the disease early, when there is no hair loss. I've caught it early in several of mine this way. Granted, if symptoms seem clear there really is no need to test, but in those cases where there is only suspicion testing can be very helpful.
