I would get the x-ray done before trying anything else, that way the vet can rule out heart problems, pneumonia, asthma. If you keep trying different things you can end up spending more than what you would have on the x-ray. Any of these problems would treated with medication. A vaporizer or warm air humidifier in his room could help with the congestion, don't use any vicks or menthol type products with it. If it's allergies it could be the detergent you are using, what you are cleaning the cage with, anything scented. If he's worse and you are washing the hammock more it could be the baby detergent. But still have the x-ray done.

If you don't already have it I would suggest "Ferrets for Dummies" as a reference, she has a lot of good information in the book about housing, health and other issues.

Good luck,
Tracy
