Subject: [ferrethealth] What is the maximum of Furosemide dosage ?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi,
The cardiologist said to increase the diuretic Furosemide from 0.2ml at
each 12 hours to 0.4ml at each 12 hours.
Nahum was still breathing so fast and still coughed occasionally.
All the informations about Nahum in this post :

I have increase the dosage the past Friday. So now that makes 6 full
days.
The cardiologist said that on Monday Nahum must have to stop to cough
and to have a better breath.
The breath seems a little better, but Nahum coughed one time in the past
night. So 5 days after
the increased dosage.
My question is : the amount of Furosemide can to be again increase ?
The Furosemide concentration is : Furosemide 10mg/ml Vet Suspension
Nahum weight is : 0.9kg
Thank you so much for any help
Marie-Agnes
[Okay, you say that the concentration is 10 mg/ml so
0.4 ml each 12 hours is 4 mg each 12 hours and he weighs
a little less than a kilogram.
Now, Furosemide, like Prednisolone is one of those meds
for which there is a range that applies for many ferrets BUT
there are individuals who wind up safely able to go higher
-- something vets try sometimes when the alternative is
death.
The usual range, depending on text book can be
1 to 4 mg per kg every 12 hours or even every 8 hours
per _Essentials of Ferrets, a guide for practitioners_
though _Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents, clinical medicine
and surgery_ mentions half that.
We've personally had ones who tolerated well over the
usual range when their heart diseases were advanced
and one who had trouble with standard dosing.
So, go by the vet's assessment on that score.
