Subject: [ferrethealth] Dissolving Meds
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
When given meds that need to be dissolved, I've always done so in water and usually afterwards flavored with Ferretone, before administering.
Recently I've had a foster that was directed to give 0.7mg Omeprazole daily by the vet. I use this med, dissolved in water, all the time, for years, with much success! However, after a week, the ferret was still grinding it's teeth, and not eating kibble, and being handfed AD watered down.
I reviewed the protocol with the foster mom, and found out she was emptying the capsule into Ferretone, no water, and administering. I asked that she first dissolve in water, flavor, then give. This evening I get a good report that finally the ferret has stop grinding, and is eating on it's own. Coincidence? I'd like to know.
I've got a concern that some tablet and capsulated meds should first be dissolved in water. My personal observation is that the med does not dissolve in the Ferretone, but appears suspended.
I know that all meds are different, but could someone speak on whether meds should be attempted to be dissolved in Ferretone, or not.
Thanks!

[Medications all DIFFER. Some meds can be ruined
by water or by exposure to saliva. Some can be ruined
by oils. Some are damaged by heat or by cold. Quite
a few are damaged by too much light exposure. Some
should not be given with certain minerals. Some need
to have food given at the same time and some should
not be given with food.
The important thing to remember is that medications
VARY so look up each individual medication, or ask
the veterinarian or pharmacist who provides it to look
it up.
