Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Experiences with senior ferrets in surgeries?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi,
I'll try and be as detailed as I can.
I had a senior sprite- 7 years old, with an adrenal disease diagnosed through behavior and symptoms, that was deemed fit for surgery due to her otherwise excellent health.
This was not an urgent decision, and her particular case was showing slow symptoms.
She was slender, active, and not medically compromised in any other way according to Dr.exam.
As with any being undergoing anesthesia, there is ALWAYS a risk,
be it human or animal.
That being said, she had her left adrenal removed, and her right debulked. There were no complications during the surgical procedure.
She healed soundly with no post-operative antibiotics, and lived an other 3 years before insulinoma and adrenal re-activity took her at 2 months past her 10th birthday.
I have every confidence in the skills of my surgeon, and especially his intuitive sense of what would be right for a particular individual.(been wit him since'96).
I had for years been saving a bit from my pay in a separate account for just such medical issues, and urge any pet owner to do the same early on, for especially our ferrets WILL inevitably have medical issues at some time. He has also been allowed to set his own cost for the surgeries he preforms, and by comparison to those having posted before here, I find his prices more than reasonable, considering his experience, and it IS most important to find a Vet with that Ferret experience.
I hope this was of assist to you

For example if a ferret has a tumor/blockage and also has cardiomyopathy, insulinoma, compromised liver, etc. (these are examples), what are the worst conditions to have going on at the same time. What conditions put a ferret most at risk under anesthesia, etc.
