Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Prednisolone side effects? - Diarrhea
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Not only can the Pred irritate the digestive tract, but the Pepto
contains sub salicylates that can aggravate and promote bleeding in an already compromised ferret.
A better medication for one being maintaine on Pred would be Carafate(sucralfate); given 1/2 hour or so before meds.
Also, prednisolone would be much easier for his body to make use of.

I give him pepto every day among other things, per his vet's advice, to try to control the diarrhea, which is now chronic. But it really doesn't matter much if we do the pepto or not, some days he has very bad diarrhea and other days he makes perfect poops. My vet says it's because of his bad kidneys, not because anything is wrong with his tummy.
> Well, we've had some pretty crazy time recently and I'm sorry to say Lucas missed his pred for a few days. The funny thing is, he pooped great those days. Then I got him back on schedule and we are back to the diarrhea. He's been on pred for 2 years now. Can prednisolone cause diarrhea as a side effect? I will mention this to my vet next week at our monthly appointment, but wanted to ask if anyone has had any similar experiences. Lucas diarrhea is the can't-make-it-to-the-litter-box kind. Lately he has been pooping all over himself, his bedding and his poor sis Matilda frequently.
