Subject: [ferrethealth] Amputation of Hind leg 1st time for vet any advice for him or me
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I am fostering a little 3 year old MF female fert. She has been limping about 10 weeks. I took her in and an X-Ray revealed what looks like bone cancer in a hind leg (around her knee and a little higher) without any metasis to other areas noted. It was decided to remove the leg at the hip. My vet is a good surgeon and has done many cats but never a ferret. Do you guys have any advice for him or me? He said to me "I guess I would do it just like a cat"

I searched amputation here but didn't find anything really alarming. But thought I should ask anyway. I am concerned about after care. Do I need to keep here in a hospital cage and flat surfaced? If so, for how long? She is free roam but only in a 10X12 room with 2 others. How much exercise should I allow her. My vet is pretty good about pain meds. He sent her home with metacam until her surgery. Anything dietary I should change? Surgery date is Thursday the 21st.

Any Advice will be greatly appreciated- Thanks, Mary Jo
