Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: 7 year old Ferret with Insulinoma and meds are not working like they use to
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Age is not an acceptable reason not to be a good surgical candidate, other health problems yes. If all else fails and there ends up being nothing else you can do what do you have to lose with surgery. It could turn out to be a justafiable risk. I have found other issues that ended up causing a lower blood glucose not just the insulinoma. We removed a fur ball from the stomach of a little girl Also removed the one or 2 insulinomas. It was a long road back but with, she is off all meds, we are doing Melatonin and she has a full body of hair now too. She was 7 and her weight was even very low. It is a decision that is made with thought but age itself is not a reason not to do it. Good luck in whateever you decide.

We took him to the vet and his glucose was 58 (this was two hours after his meds). We added diazoxide .4ml (50mg /ml) twice a day. He showed increased alertness, his movements increased in speed, less hind leg weakness, but more ataxia. After two weeks we went back for another glucose check which was 49. Over the last 7 months he has gone from 3 pounds to 2 pounds in his weight although I see him eating quite often. After the last glucose check we went up from .6ml of his Prednisolone to .8 mls twice a day. At first he seemed to do some better but yesterday he was looking weaker than he use to. Our vet is not open until Monday (and we will be taking him back tomorrow).

We're going to start him on duck soup today to see if that will help. This ferret isn't our ferret we are babysitting him while his parents are moving (long move had to move out of their old place before they could move into the new place and their temporary logings don't allow ferrets)
