Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Causes of low blood glucose
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
We have personally had one ferret each with carcinoma of the pancreas
and of lymphoma of the pancreas. Each ferret's first symptom would
have been sudden death if I had not done gentle cheek puff mouth to
muzzle artificial respiration (since both stopped breathing) and Steve
had not rushed us to emergency vet care. Those are two in almost 30
years.
In other species there is an additional type of pancreatic tumor I've read
about in the distant past but I forget what it is called and don't know if
ferrets can get them. Nor do I know of other types of tumors.
I think that some infections gobble sugar if I recall right.
If the individual had something that prevented processing or utilization
of sugar (I have no idea what those could be.) or just was not eating then
blood sugar can dump.
Also, it is possible that some meds may have that effect, I suspect.
Obviously, insulin can. Okay glucophage (which means "sugar eater")

There is also Gluconorm, and there probably are others.
Some nutrients will be able to. Too much -- shoot, can't think of it
but it is in Brewers Yeast -- can. Ah, chromium. Is that right? YES!
Right. Turmeric does in some studies. Cinnamon appears to from some
other studies. (Yes, curry can be good for you for several reasons...)

Licorice (the real type) which can also cause thrown clots (thromboses)
can also cause insulin to have too much effect.
Some types of poisoning can, for example, xylitol which is too often fatal.
Pancreatitis can dump blood sugar at times.
Of course, with ferrets the problem will USUALLY be insulinoma.
