There are a number of possibilities which have been documented with
similar situations:
mega esophagus
lung malignancy
injury to esophagus (vet documentations and people asking for help
for this has consistently mentioned the problem being bone but the
number
is small)
blockage in stomach
heart disease (Can press on the esophagus if very large.)
Dysphagia (In which case anything two liquid or too solid can be
difficult
to swallow)
throat infection
ulceration of throat (often --same as mouth ulcerations -- secondary to
kidney disease)
etc.
