Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret aspirated prednisolone
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Greetings,

Caesar is on a treatment protocol for lymphoma and receives 2.5 ml Prednisolone every other day, and 0.5 ml Lukeran every three days.

Tonight he aspirated some of the Prednisolone while I was giving it to him. He immediately lost conciousness and started turning blue, but with a combination of centrifugal spinning, upside down back slapping and mouth to mouth resuscitation I was able to get his air moving again. It all happened very quickly and I know I came very close to losing him. A full minute might have elapsed with no air moving at all but it's hard to know exactly how long he was down. He is breathing normally now and I don't hear any gurgling or see any signs of difficulty breathing. Right now he is not himself but considering what he just went through I'm not surprised. He is conscious and able to walk, but he seems like he is in a daze. For the moment he seems to be out of danger.

Can anyone advise if the aspirated Prednisolone will cause any kind of damage to the lungs? Any other comments or advice?

Needless to say, take it from someone who really knows and be careful when giving meds. He usually laps the pred right up but tonight he must have gasped suddenly while taking it. Like I said, it happened very quickly. I'll call his vet first thing in the morning.

Thanks,

Jack
