There can be some triggers for SCC per abstracts, everything from PCBs to second hand cigarette smoke have been demonstrated to be triggers in that animal genus, but I would suspect as with many malignancies there are unknown triggers, too, as well as spontaneous ones.
Malignancies DO alter the smell of an individual.
