Subject: [ferrethealth] Strange lump on ear-bloody
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a 4.5 year old female ferret that developed a lump on the outside of=
her ear just before Thanksgiving.=A0 I didn't notice it until she scratche=
d it open and it started bleeding.=A0 I took her to a wonderful ferret know=
ledgable vet who told me I didn't need to worry about it.=A0 She likened it=
to a blood blister and said it would re-absorb and heal without any proble=
ms.=A0 It's been over two months from that vet visit and the lump isn't goi=
ng away.=A0 It fills with blood and then gets scratched open, bleeds and sh=
rinks in size and then starts filling again.=A0 The blood that comes out is=
fresh but doesn't flow freely.=A0 It never seems to cause her pain until i=
t gets scratched open.=A0 She scratches at it almost as an after thought an=
d not like the lump itself=A0itches.=A0 She doesn't scratch at it frequentl=
y enough for me to think it bothers her.=A0 I clean it with warm soapy wate=
r and she goes on her merry way.=A0 It does not affect the inner portion of=
the
ear...only the outer fleshy part and does not cause the ear to swell.=A0 I=
t really does look like a blood blister but I can't think of a time when=A0=
she would have been injured to cause such a thing.=A0 Has anyone else ever =
seen anything like this or possibly know what the lump could be?=A0 I am go=
ing to schedule another vet visit and get a second opinion but I would like=
some feedback from other ferret parents.=A0 Could anyone recommend a treat=
ment option?=A0 Could it be a mast cell?=A0 An infected scratch?=A0 Should =
I ask the vet to lance the lump open to help drain it?=A0 Any information w=
ould be greatly appreciated.=A0 Thank you.

[Mast cell tumor is possible from your description
and so is hematoma.

Info on either can be found in the separate FHL
