hmm my dr always told me the common cold was a strain of bacterial influenza
[No, you got very confused on that score
but it's not an unusual subject for confusion.
There are bacterial sinus infections but they
are NEITHER colds nor influenza.
Now, you and your ferrets CAN get a secondary
bacterial sinus infection due to the compromised
health and inflammation that influenza can bring
on in either of you or that a cold can create in you.
Nasal allergies can also cause enough inflammation
in either speciesto allow bacteria to get more of a
foothold.
Influenza and colds have viral causes (which
is why antibiotics will not heal them) but they are
vastly different viruses from each other. Ferrets do
NOT get rhinoviruses which is why they are not used
for research into colds even though they are used for
research into sinus infections, influenza and some
other respiratory illnesses.
The reason for Dr. Williams' posts is because he is
one of the world's top ferret pathology experts.
