They can cause the same symptoms, so a vet sometimes can tell one
from another due to degrees of the symptoms, or probability of the
symptoms (like fever being much more likely with infection but
remember that 101 or 102 degrees F will be normal for most ferrets
who have not just been racing around), but the vet can often tell more
from testing and physical examination. Even then these two can
sometimes be hard to tell apart when they are new.
