Subject: [ferrethealth] Lots of sleepless nights because of this question.
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have had a question on my mind for quite some time now, and every time I am at the vet's office I forget to ask. When a ferret is on its last trip to the vet, I know that the time from injection to flat-line can vary. But does anyone know how long post mortem brain activity continues after all vital signs stop? I worry so much that I have wrapped my babies up to quickly. I know in humans the brain can keep processing for up to five minutes, I dont know about the fur monsters. It is just something that i have lost a lot of sleep over and I need to find out the answer. If I offended anyone or brought back painful memories, I am truly sorry.

[Well, there are functions and then there are functions.
Normally, either from pre-medication before anesthesia
or from low blood flow with a slower death unconsciousness
will happen. So, there is no processing of information or of
sensations.
BTW, I think the human figure given is very wrong.
Back to, "there are functions and then there are functions":
processing thoughts is very energy dependent and not one of
the basal functions of life. If you are unsure check for something
very basal like the eye lid reflex at the inner corner of the eye.
It's not unusual for the brain to be "dead" except for basal functions
of life before the heart and lungs cease in very ill humans, BTW.
