Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Need Advice - Adrenal ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Sukie,

I'm wondering if maybe I have the glands mixed up. I know he removed one and had to leave the other.

None of our ferrets are exposed to much sunlight at all. We keep a cover on the sides of their cage where the sunlight shines in a bit from the windows with blinds.

I do not know what the technical histology was from the surgery.

Thank you,
Jules

[Leaving the right is more common than leaving the left.
On rare occasion the left can become complicated; we had
Sherman who developed a lot of extra vascularization around
his left adrenal for some reason. The adrenal was actually
but the blood vessels were at risk of rupture and bleed-out.

The right often is involved with the Vena Cava. Vena means
Vein, the large vessels that return blood to the heart. The
Vena Cava is a truly huge, main vein. If the right adrenal has
infiltrated it then sometimes it can be ligated (cut) but that is
only if there has been enough nearby circulation to displace
the blood load. Often that is not the case.

It also can grow into the liver.

Blue light is the wavelength that most disrupts natural melatonin
production, followed by green. The least disruptive wavelength
is amber. Amount of darkness can therefore be very messed up
by those green equipment lights that are so common.

Fludrocort is the generic of Florinef. We have always had to
also give Prednisolone alone with it, and have had ferrets thrive
for as long as 5 and half years on this approach so they likely
could have for longer if in good health and not extremely old.
On the other hand, if diarrhea happens Percoten will be needed
instead because the Fludrocort will pass out too quickly. Adjustments
may be needed for activity increases, weight gain, or stresses such
as illness and often giving a bit of extra salt in the diet at such times
helps with stabilization then.

Collapse with an Addisonian ferret is complete collapse, often with
loss of consciousness and survival is at immediate risk.
